Prabowo Ties Palestine Solidarity to a Stronger Indonesia at Gontor Centennial

President Prabowo Subianto said he was reminded of the Palestinian people when the Palestinian ambassador to Indonesia presented him with a keffiyeh at the centennial reception of the Darussalam Gontor Islamic Boarding School. The moment turned a ceremonial occasion into a statement about foreign solidarity and about what Indonesia must build at home.

A keffiyeh at a centennial

The reception marked the 100th anniversary of the Darussalam Gontor Islamic Boarding School in Ponorogo and was held on Saturday, according to Antara. While addressing ambassadors of friendly countries attending the event, the president gave special attention to the Palestinian ambassador and shouted "Free Palestine" several times during his speech.

The ambassador then approached Prabowo and presented him with a keffiyeh, the traditional Palestinian headscarf. The two embraced, and the president wore it. "I was reminded of our brothers and sisters in Palestine," Prabowo said, in remarks Antara quoted from a live broadcast on the Presidential Secretariat's YouTube channel.

The logic he laid out is one of capacity. Indonesia's strength, he said, is needed so that the country has the ability to help oppressed people.
