NTB and Bali Governors Back East Manggarai Quake Response

East Nusa Tenggara Governor Emanuel Melkiades Laka Lena has thanked the governors of West Nusa Tenggara and Bali for visiting communities affected by the 7.7-magnitude earthquake in East Manggarai District. The visit placed practical aid alongside a public message of regional solidarity for residents still sheltering after the disaster.

A regional response in East Manggarai

In a statement received in Mataram, Laka Lena said support from neighbouring West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) and Bali mattered deeply to both the people and government of East Nusa Tenggara (NTT).

“Support from our brothers and sisters in NTB and Bali means a lot,” Laka Lena said.

The governors’ presence was framed as part of the Bali-NTB-NTT Regional Cooperation, bringing the three provinces together in support of affected residents. For communities coping with displacement, such visits can carry significance beyond the delivery of supplies: they show that the response is shared across provincial borders.

Iqbal and Laka Lena travelled to East Manggarai from Komodo Airport in Labuan Bajo aboard an Indonesian Army Bell 412 ER helicopter, registration HA-5185. The delegation’s itinerary then focused on direct contact with affected residents and the operational sites supporting them.

In Satar Padut, Iqbal drew on NTB’s own experience of disasters to explain the purpose of his visit. He said the delegation had come not only to bring assistance, but also to convey understanding and solidarity.

“We in NTB have experienced what you are going through,” Iqbal said, urging residents to remain patient, strong and determined during recovery.

That message matters because disaster response has two parallel demands. Material assistance is immediately necessary, while communities also need reassurance that their needs are being heard by leaders and neighbouring regions.

Aid reaches five evacuation sites

Iqbal visited five evacuation sites, where he met residents and heard their needs. The NTB delegation distributed food, blankets, tarpaulins and boxed meals; the governors also handed bread, milk and chocolate to children.

The inspection continued until evening prayer time, after which Iqbal returned to the NTB KR-BNN Solidarity Team post at Lamba Leda 1 Junior High School. He was accompanied by NTB Communications and Information Agency Chief and government spokesman Ahsanul Khalik, Disaster Mitigation Agency Chief Sadimin and Health Agency Chief Hamzi Fikri.

The wider delegation included NTB Welfare Bureau Chief Amir and members of the NTB KR-BNN Solidarity Team. Their participation underlined that the visit joined political leadership with provincial disaster, health, communications and welfare functions.
