Indonesia Prepares Scenarios for Possible Prabowo UNGA Attendance

Indonesia’s Foreign Ministry is preparing several scenarios for President Prabowo Subianto’s possible attendance at the United Nations General Assembly in New York later this month. The government has not yet confirmed the level of Indonesia’s representation.

Preparations Continue Without Final Confirmation

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Vahd Nabyl A. Mulachela said preparations were under way, with the substance of Indonesia’s contribution still being refined. Speaking at the ministry’s office in Jakarta on Thursday, he described work that combines scenario planning with further development of the country’s intended message.

“We are preparing various scenarios, while preparations on substance are continuing and being further refined,” Nabyl said.

The distinction matters. The ministry is not presenting attendance as settled; it is preparing for possibilities while continuing the work needed for participation at the annual forum. Nabyl declined to confirm whether Prabowo would attend the General Assembly this year.

Instead, he said an official announcement on the level of attendance would be made in the near future. Until then, the preparation process should be understood as a sign of institutional readiness rather than confirmation of a presidential trip.

Rehearsals and the Substance of Indonesia’s Message

The ministry is also conducting rehearsals as it develops the substance Indonesia may present. Nabyl said those rehearsals are part of the preparation process, suggesting that the focus is not merely logistical but also centred on how Indonesia’s positions are expressed at the forum.

The Foreign Ministry says it is refining both attendance scenarios and the substance Indonesia would bring to the annual meeting.

Nabyl did not identify the specific issues Indonesia will raise. He said the government would first consider the General Assembly’s overarching theme, as well as developments over the past year, in deciding what to highlight.

That approach reflects the annual character of the gathering as described by the ministry. UNGA, Nabyl said, is typically used to review developments over the preceding year, including progress already made and new developments that have emerged. Indonesia’s eventual contribution will therefore be shaped by the forum’s theme and the government’s assessment of the past year.

An Assembly Framed Around Trust and Transformation

The 81st United Nations General Assembly session opened in New York on Tuesday. Its stated theme is “Restoring trust, managing transformation: A United Nations that delivers for all.”

The session is being led by Bangladesh Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman, who was elected president and succeeded former German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock. The General Debate is scheduled for September 22-26 and September 28.

For Indonesia, the theme provides the principal frame against which officials are preparing the country’s contribution. The Foreign Ministry has indicated that it will consider both that broad agenda and developments during the past year before setting out the issues it intends to emphasise.

The ministry’s public language remains deliberately measured. It has confirmed preparations, scenario work, rehearsals and continued refinement of substance. It has not confirmed Prabowo’s attendance, specified Indonesia’s priority issues, or announced the final level of representation.

What this means for investors

For international investors watching Indonesia, the immediate takeaway is procedural rather than commercial. The government is preparing for an important multilateral forum but has not yet made a final announcement on presidential attendance.
